Building Your Course in Canvas

LTS "Getting Ready to Teach in Canvas" Series

October 19, 2026

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Join us for a workshop focused on the basics of building a course in Canvas. This session is tailored for instructors who have never used Canvas before or need a refresher on how Canvas works. Starting with an empty course shell, we’ll cover the essentials you need to know in order to set up and edit a functional Canvas course before your students arrive. Follow along as we do a live demonstration of Canvas course navigation, modules, pages, files, and assignments.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Organize your course navigation menu
  • Set up course modules
  • Create and edit a content page
  • Upload a file to a module
  • Create an assignment
  • Publish course content

While we won’t cover how to import a course from Blackboard in this workshop, the skills that you’ll learn will help you organize your imported course content and update it for the new semester with ease.

After attending this session, we highly recommend you join us for The Basics For Teaching in Canvas. That workshop covers how to run a live course you’ve already built, including how to contact students, set your notifications, and manage grading to ensure you’re prepared for the start of the semester.
