A Caution Concerning the Panopto Quizzing Tool

A Panopto Quiz on a computer screen is crossed by yellow caution tape.

Although Panopto allows instructors to add quizzes to their videos, LTS strongly recommends instructors refrain from using these quizzes as graded elements in the course. They can still be used for student engagement, but there are several reasons to caution against including them in the gradebook.

Panopto Quizzing Tool Integration with Blackboard Gradebook

The Panopto Quizzing Tool allows Panopto to send the grade a student makes on a panopto quiz to the Blackboard gradebook, but this integration can cause several problems:

  • Panopto does not keep a log of attempts, so if a student retakes the quiz, only the most recent score is retained and sent to Blackboard. There is no way to check if the quiz was taken multiple times.
  • Panopto does not record scores broken down by components, only the total score.
  • When a student can make multiple attempts, the grade can change continually. However, you can limit the quiz to allow only one attempt.
  • Panopto lists a 3-6 hour window for scores to be reported to the Blackboard gradebook. Users have reported issues with some scores not being reported.
  • Scores are only reported to the Blackboard gradebook if students access the recording from the Blackboard LTI link. If students view the recording and take the quiz from any other link, the grades are not reported to the gradebook.

How to Add Graded Video Quizzes without Using Panopto Quizzing Tool

There are ways to include video quizzes as graded elements in your course:

  • In Ultra, you can use the Rich Content Editor to embed a Panopto video in a quiz (note: Blackboard calls all question-based assessments “tests”), allowing you to make full use of Blackboard’s extensive logging and tracking of student engagement.
  • In Original, you can use the Rich Content Editor to embed a Panopto video in the “Instructions” portion of a quiz.

Note on Support

Because of the problems associated with the Panopto Quizzing Tool integration in Blackboard, LTS can provide limited support to instructors who choose to use it as a graded element in their course. Consequently:

  • We recommend using the Panopto Quizzing Tool strictly for increasing student engagement, but not for a grade.
  • We cannot assist with gradebook related issues that occur as a result of using the Panopto Quizzing Tool for graded assignments. We can, however, assist instructors on how to use the tool, and with alternatives.
  • The only avenue of support available to us for gradebook issues resulting from the Panopto Quizzing Tool is to escalate the issue to Panopto’s support team.
