Canvas and Banner Integration at UIC: What’s New and Why It Matters
UIC’s Banner-to-Canvas integration gives instructors faster enrollment updates, a more streamlined grade-submission process, and less manual setup for cross-listed and combined courses.
For years, keeping Blackboard and Banner in sync required manual steps, and at times, students waited hours or even days to gain access to courses they had already registered for. UIC's implementation of the Ellucian Intelligent Learning Platform changes that. The new event-driven integration allows actions in Banner to trigger real-time updates in Canvas.
Students Get Access Faster
Under the new model, a student’s enrollment in Banner triggers a corresponding enrollment in Canvas in real time. There is no batch-processing window or overnight delay. Once the Canvas course and relevant materials are published, students can access course content, review the syllabus, and begin participating as soon as their registration is processed. For students navigating late registration, waitlist movement, or last-minute schedule changes, this responsiveness can make a meaningful difference in their readiness from the first day of class.
Grade Submission in a Single Click
On the instructor side, a new Canvas export tool allows grades to be submitted directly to Banner without leaving the LMS. The tool pulls grades from the Canvas gradebook and gives instructors an opportunity to review them before submission. Once the grades are ready, instructors can send them to Banner with a single click. This streamlined workflow reduces manual steps, lowers the risk of spreadsheet transcription errors, and supports more accurate and timely grade reporting.
Cross-Listed Courses Now Merge Automatically
One of the most operationally significant changes is the automatic merging of cross-listed and combined courses. When sections are merged or cross-listed in Banner, Canvas now reflects that structure automatically. This change resolves the majority of course-merge cases in the UIC LMS, replacing a process that previously required manual intervention by instructors or support staff.
A More Connected System
Taken together, these changes represent a shift toward tighter, more reliable coordination between UIC’s two core academic systems. Students face fewer barriers at the start of the term, instructors spend less time on administrative tasks, and institutional records remain aligned with less manual effort. The move to a vendor-supported, event-driven integration also positions UIC to adopt future Ellucian capabilities, including a unified student experience, without creating the long-term maintenance burden associated with custom integrations.
