Unlocking the Power of Video: A Deep Dive into Panopto Connect, Access AI, and Knowledge Insights

As institutions continue to expand hybrid learning and leverage video for instruction, tools that simplify content creation, ensure accessibility, and provide actionable insights have become critical. Panopto, UIC’s video content management system, has responded with a suite of advanced features designed to support educators and administrators across the entire video lifecycle.

Over the next year, faculty and students can explore three of Panopto’s most innovative tools: Panopto Connect, Panopto Access AI, and Panopto Knowledge Insights—and how they’re transforming the way we teach, support students, and evaluate learning outcomes.

Panopto Connect is a browser-based recording and streaming solution that supports a video library for YouTube and Vimeo. It provides video course content, branding, and immersive learning experiences accessible outside of the LMS.

Key Features:

  • Branded Video Portals: Design and customize online video galleries with custom navigation, pages, banners, and imagery to match an organization’s brand identity.
  • Secure Content Sharing: Publish and share content with external audiences while maintaining control over access permissions. This allows organizations to securely distribute videos to specific teams, classes, or individuals.
  • Customizable Pages: Create dedicated web pages within the portal, allowing organizations to curate content based on topics, tags, or categories, making it easy for viewers to navigate and find relevant videos.
  • In-Portal Playback: Videos are viewed directly within the Connect portal using the Panopto embed player, providing a streamlined and immersive viewing experience.
  • Video Carousels and Grids: Organize and showcase video content with customizable carousels or grid layouts, with the ability to control the order and display of videos on each page.
  • Mobile-Friendly Design: Connect portals are optimized for viewing on various devices, including mobile phones, tablets, and desktops, ensuring a consistent and intuitive experience for all viewers.
  • Portal Managers: Designate specific users as Portal Managers to oversee and manage the content within the Connect portals.
  • Integration with Core Panopto Platform: Leveraging the core Panopto video management features, Connect portals automatically transcribe every word spoken and shown in meeting recordings, creating a searchable record of discussions and presentations.
  • Live streaming: Allows users to easily broadcast live events, lectures, or meetings, making them accessible to a wider audience. Viewers can also pause, rewind, and replay during a live broadcast.
  • Analytics and Reporting: Gain valuable insights into viewer engagement, video performance, and platform usage with Panopto’s video analytics platform.
  • Secure Access: Supports Single Sign-On (SSO) for easy and secure login for existing users.

Why It Matters:

Panopto Connect makes it easier to create, organize, and share video content beyond the LMS. Customizable portals allow instructors and departments to curate video libraries, deliver live or recorded content, and ensure access across devices. Built-in analytics, secure sharing, and transcription features support both instructional flexibility and student engagement.

Accessibility is not just a legal requirement—it’s a moral imperative. Panopto Access AI uses artificial intelligence to automate and enhance accessibility features in video content, helping institutions meet compliance standards while supporting every learner.

Key Features:

  • Automatic Speech-to-Text Captioning: Instantly generates high-accuracy captions for all uploaded or recorded videos using advanced AI. This ensures that every spoken word becomes accessible, empowering those who rely on captions and supporting compliance with accessibility standards.
  • Multi-language Transcript Support: Provides transcripts in multiple languages, making course content accessible to a global audience. This feature is invaluable for institutions with diverse, multilingual learners and helps break down language barriers to education.
  • Searchable, Navigable Transcripts: Every transcript is fully searchable, allowing users to quickly locate specific terms or topics within a video. Interactive timelines and clickable transcript entries enable viewers to jump to precise moments, improving the efficiency of study and review.
  • Speaker Identification: Accurately distinguishes between different speakers in a recording, labeling who is speaking at each moment. This is especially useful for panel discussions, interviews, or multi-presenter lectures, making content clearer and more organized.
  • Caption Editing Interface: Offers a user-friendly tool for reviewing and correcting automatically generated captions, ensuring accuracy and context are preserved. Editors can easily make adjustments, add custom vocabulary, or refine timing for optimal comprehension.
  • Screen Reader and Keyboard Navigation Compatibility: Designed for seamless use with assistive technologies, Panopto Access AI ensures all video players and portals are compatible with leading screen readers and support full keyboard navigation. This guarantees that individuals with visual or mobility challenges can access and interact with content independently.

Why It Matters:

By automating time-consuming accessibility tasks, Access AI ensures that students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or non-native English speakers can engage with video content on equal footing. It also enhances learning for all students through searchable transcripts and flexible playback options. In a world increasingly shaped by inclusive design, Access AI makes accessibility practical, scalable, and built-in—not an afterthought.

While creating and sharing video is essential, understanding its impact is equally important. Panopto Knowledge Insights is an advanced analytics suite that surfaces meaningful data about how students engage with content—and where they might need help.

Key Features:

  • Viewer Heatmaps and Engagement Drop-off Detection: Visualize exactly which parts of a video attract the most attention and where viewers lose interest. Heatmaps show minute-by-minute engagement, helping educators pinpoint content that resonates or needs improvement. Drop-off detection highlights segments where viewers frequently stop watching, identifying opportunities to rework or clarify material.
  • Quiz Performance Tracking: Monitor how students perform on embedded video quizzes, question by question. This enables instructors to identify concepts that may require further explanation and to provide timely, targeted feedback to learners. Aggregate analytics reveal patterns across the class, supporting adaptive teaching methods.
  • AI-driven Topic Tagging and Content Discovery: Artificial intelligence automatically tags videos with key topics, themes, and concepts discussed. This makes searching within and across videos intuitive and efficient, empowering both instructors and students to locate relevant content instantly. Tags also enhance discoverability and can suggest supplementary materials.
  • Cross-video Trend Analysis: Aggregate engagement and performance data across multiple videos, courses, or semesters. Spot broader trends in student engagement, content effectiveness, and learning outcomes. Such insights can inform curricular decisions and highlight best practices for video-based instruction.
  • Custom Dashboards for Instructors and Admins: Tailor analytical dashboards to display the most relevant metrics for different roles. Instructors can focus on individual and class engagement, quiz completion rates, and content retention, while administrators access higher-level overviews across courses, departments, or the institution as a whole.

Why It Matters:

For faculty, Knowledge Insights reveals how students interact with videos—whether they rewatch segments, skip ahead, or disengage entirely. This can inform teaching strategies, highlight at-risk students, and drive continuous improvement in course design. For administrators, these insights support data-informed decision-making across departments and programs.
