Student Guide to Using Canvas
Introduction
UIC is officially moving from Blackboard to a new learning management system, Canvas. Canvas includes modern, intuitive tools that make assignments, grading, communication, and collaboration easier for both students and instructors, whether you use it in a browser or on a mobile device. Access everything you use every day easily in one place.
Over the next year, courses will appear in both Blackboard and Canvas as we transition. In Spring, Summer, and Fall 2026, your courses will be offered in both Blackboard and Canvas. Beginning January 2027, Blackboard will no longer be used for instruction, and all UIC courses will be taught in Canvas.
This page includes the FAQs, guides, help links, and training materials you need to get started with Canvas, and it will continue to be updated throughout the transition.
What to Expect in Spring 2026
Courses may appear in Blackboard or Canvas. Instructors choose which system to use.
Watch for instructor announcements.
If your instructor publishes the course in Canvas, you’ll receive a Canvas announcement via your UIC email.
In Blackboard, instructors will also post an announcement with a direct link to the Canvas course.
Check both Blackboard and Canvas at the start of the semester.
If you’re uncertain where a course lives, log in to both systems during Week 1.
Keep using Blackboard, but check Canvas early.
Many courses will still be in Blackboard this spring. Some may shift to Canvas. Checking early ensures you stay on track.

Yes. A Canvas Student app is available for both iOS and Android. We recommend using it to view course content and details, but not for submitting graded work. You can learn more by watching the Canvas Student app video guide or by selecting the appropriate Student app guide from the Canvas Mobile information page.
