Blackboard Course Storage Limit Reminder for Summer/Fall Semester Preparation
As we approach the preparation phase for the upcoming Summer and Fall semesters, we want to remind all instructors of the ongoing 2 GB storage limit per course on Blackboard. This policy, established by the LMS Governance Board and effective since July 1, 2021, is designed to enhance the student learning experience and maintain optimal system performance by managing storage resources efficiently.
Policy Highlights:
- 2 GB Storage Quota: Each course on Blackboard is allocated a 2 GB storage limit to encourage the development of accessible and engaging course content.
- Alternative Storage Options: Instructors are encouraged to use UIC-supported video streaming and cloud storage services. These services facilitate seamless integration of digital content into Blackboard, promoting student engagement while adhering to the storage limit.
Benefits:
- Increased Engagement: External tools offer more features, such as quizzes and polls within videos, enhancing the learning experience.
- Optimized Content Access: Content hosted on cloud services is optimized for all devices, reducing bandwidth needs for students.
- Accessibility and Inclusivity: Using streaming services supports the creation of accessible content with features like closed-captioning.
- System Performance: Storing large files externally improves Blackboard’s performance, affecting maintenance and backup processes.
Compliance and Support:
- Compliance Reminder: As you prepare your course content, please ensure it aligns with the storage quota to avoid upload restrictions. Instructors will receive an error message when course storage exceeds the 2GB limit, and additional material cannot be uploaded until course material is removed or a request for more storage capacity is approved.
- Assistance: Instructors exceeding storage limits will receive guidance to manage their course materials effectively.

You can see your course storage by following these steps:
- Original: Log into your course site, navigate to the Control Panel, then to Course Tools, and click on Course Storage.
Ultra: Log into your course site, navigate to Books and Institu - A screen will display the total storage for that course (see image). To review all courses assigned to you as an instructor, click Next in that window.
