Computer Labs
Introduction
Campus computer labs provide centrally managed computers with standard software. These labs are available to UIC students, staff, faculty, and authorized guests. Many of the labs are available for reservation for instruction or special events. There are some labs that are open 24 hours, 7 days a week. In addition to general use labs, Technology Solutions manages labs with access limited to a certain group, such as residence hall residents.

Lab Rules
The following rules apply in the Technology Solutions Computer Labs:
- No food or drinks of any kind are allowed in the labs. Sealed beverages should remain in backpacks and not be placed near computers.
- Academic work takes priority over non-academic or non-class related work. If a student is looking for a PC to do their class-related work and all the seats are taken, students not doing academic work should be prepared to leave their PC. Students’ cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
- Students should be prepared to show their UIC i-card when requested.
- The lab being used may be reserved. Students should be prepared to leave upon notice. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the reservation status of a lab. The reservation schedule is posted on the door.
- Respectful behavior to others is expected at all times in the labs. No obscene or harassing behavior will be tolerated.
- Labs are study space and as such noise level should be kept to a minimum. No audible music playing is allowed. Even when using headsets, those seated around you should not be able to hear it. This includes no loud conversation or cellphone usage.
- No tampering with the equipment. Problems should be reported to the Learning Technology Solutions support office at 312-413-0003 option 1, or via email to LTS@uic.edu.
Lab Reservations
Any UIC faculty, staff, department, TA (please provide instructor name) can reserve labs. Graduate students who are teaching a course need to specify this when making the request. Undergraduate students and undergraduate student groups may not reserve computer labs without a faculty/staff sponsor, who must contact the Office of Classroom Scheduling on their behalf and who will serve as the contact person and responsible party. Users in the lab must have a valid UIC NetID and password to use all features available on the lab machines. Guest access can be enabled for certain events upon request via the Guest Login Access Request form. Guest credentials can only be used for the duration of your space reservation. Labs can only be reserved during open hours. For a list of lab hours, please take a look at Lab hours and locations. Technology Solutions and OCS reserve the right to cancel reservations if this policy is not followed. At the end of the session, the instructor/coordinator is responsible for ensuring all machines have been logged out.
Departments should already have determined their course offerings for the upcoming semester. One-time requests for computer labs must be made at least one week in advance. If a last-minute reservation is needed for a date within the same week or earlier, please call OCS at 312-413-3640 to request expedited processing, which may or may not be possible. You must have a confirmation email with a ticket number in order to use a TS computer lab for anevent/class.
Lab Reservation Priorities: Labs are typically reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, but priority for reservations is given to UIC classes and instructional use. Additionally, certain departments have priority use of specific labs. When processing reservations, consideration is given to class size, demand, and availability. Published enrollment caps for specific sections will be checked, and any discrepancies will be noted and may result in a move to an alternative lab to best allocate limited lab space resources. Reservation requests where the enrollment cap exceeds the computer lab’s capacity will not be approved due to fire/life-safety code. Lab reservations should be requested for classes that require significant hands-on participation for attendees or students in almost every class session. Demand for lab space is high. If an instructor is not using the lab on a particular date, they must contact OCS at classroomscheduling@uic.edu in advance to cancel the reservation and make the space available to another class or group. TS/OCS reserves the right to cancel the remainder of a reservation if it is determined that the computer lab is not in use during the reserved time period. Computer Lab Reservations for Special Events: TS computer labs can be reserved for events such as conferences or training sessions. These reservations are granted at the sole discretion of TS and OCS and must not interfere with the primary purpose of the labs. Such reservation requests are subject to the following guidelines:
Labs cannot be reserved for full weekdays during the semester (this policy includes full-day reservations minus a lunch break).
Reservations for classes take priority over special event reservation requests.
Lab reservations for the duration of an entire semester are processed only after the previous semester ends.
Reservation requests cannot interfere with the regularly scheduled upgrade or maintenance of the lab
Reservations for non-UIC-sponsored events are subject to a $40 per day, per attendee/computer charge. This fee does not cover the cost for software installations and staffing. This fee is waived for UIC-sponsored events.
A request for a lab assistant is subject to a $15.00 per hour per lab assistant charge for the duration of the reservation, plus two additional hours. For example, a reservation for a computer lab from 9:00 am – noon, where a lab assistant is requested, will incur the following charge: $45.00 + $30.00 = $50.00 total. This charge applies whether or not the event is sponsored by UIC.
A reservation request that requires software installation is subject to a $55/hour charge. This charge applies whether or not the event is sponsored by UIC.
If software needs to be installed, it must be provided to Technology Solutions at least 5 weeks before the event to ensure it is installed for the event. Software licenses must be provided by the sponsoring person, unit, event, or department to cover all attendees. Software will be removed from the lab machines after the last day of the reservation. Most reservable TS computer labs are equipped with whiteboards and projectors. This equipment is included in the reservation at no additional cost. Any other equipment needed for the event must be supplied by the person, unit, event, or department requesting the reservation at their expense. If the equipment requires the installation of software or other assistance from TS, the installation is subject to a $55.00/hour fee. All other rules and policies mentioned elsewhere on this website apply to these reservations
